We Watched Ourselves Dissipate
we caught our breath with butterfly nets
and exhaled
the pieces of each other's wings
that stuck in our lungs.
the sky gave a shiver and the stars
unsealed, their firefly cores shimmering
and fluttering
toward us.
plucking them from the air, they slip
between our fingertips
and fall like butterfly wings
to the ground.
we conduct the celestial engagement with
our metallic hearts
that control this unsteady rhythm of
love crescendos
and staccato love-making.

Princess Bee
There was one larva who never ate honey and pollen; only royal jelly. She sensed resentment from her sisters. They all wondered what made her so special. She wondered too. Out of all the hundreds of them, why her?
She wanted pollen and honey, like the others. Young workers took it from the foragers, and gave it to all except her. She had a sense of the wonderful, sticky sweetness all around her, but she wasnt allowed to try it even once.
Its all right, one of the workers said soothingly, as she fed her one day. You are going to be a qu

sick
Death slouches over the edge of her bed, licking his lips as he caresses her thighs. He sings the noise of wind and rain crashing all around and her head throbs with the sound. Her head is hot. Her forehead is on fire and her cheeks catch alight with it. She burns silently and sees red, red, black.
Tiny insects have crawled beneath her fingernails and they dig with tiny claws and teeth until they are swarming beneath her skin, biting outward at her flesh. Each vertebrae carries bruises and as she tosses her body about the bed they ache loudly and sharply.
All the heat has rushed to her face, her body shakes like a leaf in wind and goosebump

EDIT (10/26/2008): I just want to thank everyone who's fav'd or commented on this thing. It blows my mind that people are still reading this and fav'ing it; I never imagined that I'd still be relevant four months after my DD, which was unexpected in and of itself. So thank you for all the love and support; as a young writer who's never quite been sure of herself, you guys really make me feel loved.
This came out much longer and much more different than I had been expecting -- but the story ran away with me, and here we are!
I actually really like this one. I've no idea why, but I do. Probably because I love the story that it's based on. And I do all my best writing in the dead of the night.
Inspired by Robert Coover's novella, Briar Rose (which can be read in its entirety here), and *simplyprose's April word association prompt, here. Also entered in ~ElectroBaby's yearlong contest, here, as a March entry.
Don't let the mature content filter deter you too much, there's not much mention of what happened; it was a precautionary measure.

I missed reading this story and congratulating you on the DD by several years.
But it still held my attention throughout and has a terrific, realistic end. Thank you.
